DESCRIPTION
A male Kifwebe mask of the Songye, from Zaire (modern-day Democratic Republic of Congo). These ritual masks were used in ceremonies of the Kifwebe secret society's dances of the same name. Often the masks would be dressed with long beards of plant fibre that attached to holes along the edges of the mask. This one, lacking the beard, would be known as a Kabemba, meaning 'hawk'. These masks are representative of the sorcery and magic of the Songye, and this mask is no exception in capturing the spirit and dynamism of the culture.
